What gear do I need to start training?

  • A rash guard and grappling shorts or spats for no-gi classes: These form-fitting clothes help reduce friction and prevent mat burns during training.

    • Note: An athletic shirt and gym shorts(no pockets) will work fine as well.

  • A mouthguard: This protects your teeth and reduces the risk of injury during sparring or rolling.

  • A BJJ Gi for Gi classes: This is a durable, specially designed uniform for grappling that consists of a jacket, pants, and a belt to denote your rank.

    • We have spare Gis incase you visit and need one.

Is there anything I need to know before my first class?

  • Wear appropriate attire: If you have a BJJ gi, bring it along for gi classes. For no-gi classes, wear a rash guard and grappling shorts or spats.

  • Hygiene: Make sure you're clean and have trimmed nails to prevent injuries or infections. Remove any jewelry or piercings to avoid accidents.

  • Arrive early: Give yourself time to fill out any necessary paperwork, meet the instructor, and get familiar with the facility.

  • Be open-minded: BJJ is a complex martial art with a steep learning curve. Be patient, ask questions, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi training?

Gi training involves wearing a Gi, while No-Gi training is done in a rash guard and grappling shorts or spats. The main difference between the two is the use of the Gi as an additional tool for grips, control, and submissions in Gi training. No-Gi training focuses more on speed, athleticism, and techniques that don't rely on clothing grips.
